After closing the speed brakes and raising the gear and flaps, I turned crosswind at the departure end. Our Talon accelerated as it climbed toward pattern altitude1,500 feet AGL. The final turn in the T-38 is a nose-low, 180-degree turn designed to arrive on final one mile from the threshold at 500 feet AGL.

The pilot reported that he was too high and fast crossing the threshold 70 feet above ground level (AGL) at 90 mph. The pilot believed he could straighten the flight path and touch down in time to stop.

If it prevents you from landing close to the threshold, a short runway becomes even shorter. x V SO (or POH recommendation) by around 500 feet AGL. A faster, reduced-flaps approach improves aircraft control during strong crosswinds or gusts. If you’re not stabilized at 200 feet AGL, go around. On a normal landing, you’d pull the power over the threshold, begin your roundout, and flare around 10 feet AGL. When crossing the threshold, start reducing the power.
