It had cut into the tail rotor gearbox, tearing it off the helicopter. The pilot reported that he was too high and fast crossing the threshold 70 feet above ground level (AGL) at 90 mph. Halfway down the runway the airplane was about 30 feet AGL at a speed of about 45 mph, and oscillating 20 degrees either side of center.
