King noted that Epic focuses on stick-and-rudder skills to the point that the first time in the airplane the pilot uses absolutely none of the automation. Steering with the rudder pedals is direct and effective—brakes are only required for the tightest turns. Prior to takeoff, the rudder trim is set from 50 to 100 percent to the right.

A NOTAM closing Alton Bay was still active until 7:00 am that morning. As expected, the NOTAM closing the ice runway did expire and no new notification replaced it. "Wakey-Wakey, Eggs and Bakey" It almost did not happen. Additionally, a promising forecast nonetheless held some risk. I took my own advice and slept until 7:00 am.

Your ailerons and rudder will be neutral once you’re in the crab position. We use the rudder to align the aircraft’s longitudinal axis with the centerline. Simultaneously, we apply ailerons opposite the rudder input. The ailerons control our lateral position over the runway.
