Game On!

Plane and Pilot

Although I havent spent much time around GB1s (except for drooling over them while they are on display and flying at airshows) I am always taken aback by how much larger the airplane appears to be in personparticularly, the tall, sweeping rudder that curves down to a sharp point with just enough ground clearance. Takeoff Over 50-ft.

Trial by Ice

Air Facts

The general prognosis indicated no icing in the clouds, no turbulence and a quartering headwind from the west resulting in a mere five knots of headwind component. I filed my IFR flight plan, received a clearance and took off into the gray winter sky. Phil was a cool head under pressure. Up we went, trading airspeed for altitude.

Holding Procedures – Airplane Holding Patterns Easily Explained

Pilot Institute

Holding patterns are a great way to keep your position and ensure clearance from terrain and other aircraft. Hold Altitude Holding procedures, flown correctly, will always allow for sufficient terrain clearance. For tailwind on the outbound leg, subtract 1 second per knot of tailwind component. The wind is 050° at 25 knots.

Practicing Steep Turns: Techniques to Improve Pilot Control and Precision

Pilot's Life Blog

Set your power and speed for the maneuver, maintaining a steady airspeed typically 10-20 knots above stall speed to allow for a margin of safety. Monitor your instruments closely, especially the altimeter and airspeed indicator, and make small, continuous adjustments. Maintaining the Turn: Use pitch control to maintain altitude.

Accident Briefs—July 2025

Plane and Pilot

Investigators noted at the time of the accident the temperature was 30 degrees Celsius, the dew point was 4 C, and the altimeter setting was 29.98. Probable cause(s): The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from trees after takeoff, during high density altitude weather conditions. The calculated density altitude was 4,790 feet.

Passing Your Private Pilot Check Ride Requires the Right Preparation

Flying Magazine

For example, if the ACS states that during takeoff the applicant will “maintain V X /V Y as appropriate +10/-5 knots to a safe maneuvering attitude,” focus on nailing the airspeed. If the POH says V X is 67 knots, fly at 67 knots. Chapter 3 in the AIM has details on dimensions of airspace, cloud clearances, and visibility.

Flying a Skylane From Canada to Belize

Air Facts

This was indeed the case as I observed my GPS indicated ground speed to be 165 Knots. I encountered unexpected headwinds to start, slowing my groundspeed down to 75 knots at times. Additionally, the needle on my altimeter at one point was swinging through 500 increments!
