In reality, jet engine thrust reversers only redirect their exhaust by about 135 degrees, not 180 degrees, which is exactly opposite the normal direction. Target or bucket reversers were commonly used on many first-generation turbofan airliners and some military jets. The Douglas DC-9 is another jet with the same kind of reversers.
