Once again, an announcement from the flight crew was made but it was difficult to hear what he was saying as it sounded like another voice in the background (could be the other pilot talking to the ATC) and also the cabin crew made some important announcement including a reminder to us about the consequences if we fail to follow the rules.

USAir flight 1493 was on its final approach to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The Boeing 737-300 had 83 passengers and 6 crew onboard. There was a crew change in Washington DC, then they flew on to Columbus, Ohio. It was February 1st, 1991. The flight had been smooth and uneventful and now the sun was setting.

Unlike the A320neo, this aircraft is configured with IFE screen entertainment for every seat and lie-flat bed for the business class cabin and this product is familar to me as I had experienced it before with Copa Airlines and that flight was also a long flight for a narrow-body, about 23 minutes longer than this flight (5 hours 37 mins).

The aircraft was on final approach to SKG. By then the aircraft started its descent when the cabin crew were released from their seats. By the time they are done, they started collecting the thrash but during our descent, we encountered some rough turbulence and the hardworking crew had to hold on.

My aircraft, VT-YAK had a long layover at this airport as the previous flight took place the day before so therefore a set of crew was needed to be transported to the aircraft. After getting up from my seat, I followed the cabin crew who led me to my new assigned seat and to my relief it was a window seat. I can only speculate.

The Captain made his announcement and gave us update on the weather on route and for the announcments by the cabin crew, it was done in 5 languages including the Taiwanese dialect. One of the cabin crew was waiting to assist any passengers that requires assistance. This is the second cabin of the economy class.

Just like ITA's A220 cabin, the leather seats are quite comfortable but the legroom space is slightly better on this aircraft. The cabin crew announced to us to seat at our allocated seat which I assumed that this is needed for balancing issue for this aircraft. We were on final approach.

What else I noted about this flight is the cabin crew made a birthday announcement wishing a 17 years old passenger, a happy birthday (I wonder whether she received anything from the crew - SQ does offer birthday cakes but you need to request in advance) and our first officer on this flight was a female. The cabin crew were great as they came around many times during the flight to serve water and of course the 2 meals we received. We were on final approach onto runway 02L, greeted by the familar sighting of the Eastern part of Singapore. It is just annoying that some can't sit properly or be considerate towards others.

The reason is that the nice cabin crew offered to move my seat mate which she accepted to the front so that she could get off as soon as she can to catch her connecting flight. This was my flight's final assigned gate. I spotted another green stripes livery on this A330-900neo on final approach to this airport. Once on board, I noticed a cabin crew was serving champagne on a plastic cup and was pleasantly surprised I was given one, I suppose because of the occasion (New Year's Day).

China Airlines also operate this model and the latest news is EVA Air will also join the A350 club from 2026 onwards, subject to changes. Time to board Starlux's Airbus A350-900!
