Warrior 481 Gets a Useful Load Increase

My hangar neighbor Steve was on short final at SDC in his Bonanza. I hit my head on the Warrior's ceiling at least once. When I arrived, Northeast Philly Airport was not only extremely busy ("Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full") but everyone was landing with a gusty 20 knot crosswind. We'll see how that goes.

Centerline, centerline, centerline Air Facts Journal It was a beautiful May day as we grabbed the tow bar to pull the 1981 Cessna 182 out of the hangar. As I tuned the ATIS for Destin Executive, I was glad to hear there was no ceiling reported. No ceiling so no hold for us today! Approach switched me to Tower.

At the airport, there was ice and snow to remove from in front of the hangar door, fuel to add to the Warrior now resting on three fully inflated tires (the left main had a new tube), and then there was the moment when I slipped on ice while pulling the airplane from the hangar and landed flat on my back. We had a deal.

Green – VFR ( Visual Flight Rules ) Ceiling > 3,000 ft. I chose the default setting of 15 knots because the max demonstrated crosswind component of our Cherokee Six is 17 knots. If I see a yellow light, I need to take a close look at winds and runway alignment before driving to the hangar. C ( 12°F)/-11.0°C Washington!

I was intrigued by what appeared to be a grass crosswind runway at North Bass Island, but no such runway is listed in official publications. Behind me, the other Cherokee (a Cherokee Six) landed and aggressively made for the main commercial hangar building. This airport is a mere 1.4 Must be the bootlegger's strip.

I have one airplane in my hangar that can only carry 500 pounds of payload with the fuel tanks topped off—that’s it, if I’m going to respect the max-takeoff-weight limit, and I will.
