Overview of the Pitot-Static System The pitot-static system is a network of ports, tubes and lines that utilizes ambient (static) and dynamic pressure for the operation of the airspeed indicator (ASI), altimeter, and vertical speed indicator (VSI). The pitot tube is a peculiar looking probe on aircraft to our non-flying friends.

About halfway through the conversation, the examiner started asking about the pitot-static system. The FAA isn’t out to get you on your checkride.

After all, I had just aced my checkride. I didnt know but it might have been due to the angle of attack of the pitot tube that would not let the full force of the relative wind enter the tube. I tucked the hard-earned temporary certificate into my wallet on the second day of June, 1972. What else was there to know?
