The controller cleared the aircraft to 23,000 feet cruising altitude and then, after the pilot read back the clearance, handed the pilot off to another controller at Atlanta Center. The controller cleared the flight to 29,000 feet and then to 34,000 feet. The oxygen is stored in a 76 cubic foot bottle in a compartment in the tail.

The next leg, and the two after it, followed my standard cross-country plan. I filed IFR , mostly so that I could get the altitude I wanted without having to worry about cloud clearances, and so if some little squirt cumulus popped up, I could blast through it or just nick the side of it. I was glad that I had contingency packed.

Preparations for this trip the night before included: Flight planning to time-out each of the four legs of the planned round trip as well as verification of customs hours (Kingston, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm M-F, Ogdensburg, 8:00 am to midnight every day). Filing three IFR flight plans (KSDC to CYGK, CYGK to CYRO, and CYRO to KOGS).

Once the rain relented, we staggered our departures and called for our IFR clearances on the ground. Despite those ground clearances, we found that the ceiling above our home airport was high enough to accommodate VFR departures with airborne clearances. Better safe than sorry.
