Plane and Pilot

A witness reported that they saw the airplane lift off from the runway and remain in ground effect until it crossed the departure end of the runway. Probable cause(s): The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from trees after takeoff, during high density altitude weather conditions. He had no further memory of the event.

High Wing or Low Wing – Which Trainer Should I Choose?

On the ground they offer clearance over many fences. Short field landings can be shorter because the drag robbing ground effect is lessened by the greater distance between the wing and ground. Why the success of high wings? On aircraft fitted with floats, the wings may also pass over docks and shorelines.

Syracuse advised of lake effect snow creating a wall between us and Sodus. Gilead and I, both trailing Ed, ran into dramatically lowering visibility and requested pop-up IFR clearances. Resist pulling back, instead letting it accelerate in ground effect (or should we say water effect) for a few seconds. I’d also like to see just a little more room between the panel and seat—or maybe just allow the seat to move back a little more for slightly greater yoke clearance. The plane will fly itself off.
