Flying in the clouds in a single engine airplane when the OAT is below freezing is not a good idea! The general prognosis indicated no icing in the clouds, no turbulence and a quartering headwind from the west resulting in a mere five knots of headwind component. The OAT immediately shot up to +5 degrees C. We were free!

PIREPs in the area were mixed—two for icing and two for turbulence—but none matched my intended altitudes. Many flight clearances out of Rhode Island head through northern Connecticut and Southern Massachusetts to avoid busy airapce. The Clearance Conflict I arrived at the airport in rain, with 600–1000 foot overcast.

Bad data caused by turbulence, turns, and other anomalies was discarded. All of our flying started early in the mornings before afternoon turbulence and storms. It’s technically an IFR procedure, but can be used by any pilot to assure clearance from obstacles. Pressure altitudes were converted to density altitude.
