Although I havent spent much time around GB1s (except for drooling over them while they are on display and flying at airshows) I am always taken aback by how much larger the airplane appears to be in personparticularly, the tall, sweeping rudder that curves down to a sharp point with just enough ground clearance.

Rudder trim fixes the yaw issue, but surprisingly we do not have a single caution or warning light. I also advised ATC of our impending total engine failure and asked for clearance to the nearest airfield. The yaw from the asymmetrical thrust was now gone, and the rudder needed to be retrimmed.

I filed IFR , mostly so that I could get the altitude I wanted without having to worry about cloud clearances, and so if some little squirt cumulus popped up, I could blast through it or just nick the side of it. The next leg, and the two after it, followed my standard cross-country plan.

Noting the tailwheel was indeed unlocked, I moved my foot to the top of the rudder pedals to ensure the brakes were operating as normal. For those unfamiliar with the practice of S-turning, it is a combination of using the rudder pedals to quite literally form the shape of an “S” on the ground in order to peer in front of the airplane’s nose.
