Published time to climb to 20,000 feet is 18 minutes, and cruise speeds are advertised to be 205 knots at 15,000 feet. Most A36 owners we talk with plan on 165 knots and 1,000 fpm climbs when lightly loaded. The B36TC, with its 200-pound gross weight increase, can carry roughly 900 pounds in the cabin with the tanks full.

I took off from Runway 34L at 169,800 pounds gross weight, rotated at 1.8 minutes, covered 1,722 nm at an average ground speed of 511 knots, and burned 22,200 pounds of jet-A. Below 500 feet I got a bit slow, momentarily down to 147 knots, versus a reference speed of 144 and target of 152. I hand-flew the first 13.3

Should I treat every VFR hop like I’m departing into low IMC with a 10,000-foot density altitude at max gross weight? Do I have to be within ±1 knot and ±10 feet on every approach? Maybe my attitude toward these flights is wrong. Do I need to spend hours on ForeFlight before every local flight?

We routinely taxi at 1200 rpm due to the low spray…[we] can cruise at 10 knots” in displacement mode, something a Goose can’t do. Early on a speed restriction of 130 knots was applied as a flutter issue. This was resolved on the kit version and led to cruising at 50% power and 120 knots, which proved to be the Gweduck’s sweet spot.
