Steering with the rudder pedals is direct and effective—brakes are only required for the tightest turns. Prior to takeoff, the rudder trim is set from 50 to 100 percent to the right.

A NOTAM closing Alton Bay was still active until 7:00 am that morning. As expected, the NOTAM closing the ice runway did expire and no new notification replaced it. In the descent, wind direction rotated counterclockwise until it became a direct southerly crosswind. "Wakey-Wakey, Eggs and Bakey" It almost did not happen.

Thinking we could be on fire, we initiated a 7000-fpm descent. Little thought is given to the fact that a 7000-fpm descent will fog the windows. We had checked weather, Notams, and everything else, and all seemed good. Later, YFB Twr/Wx said that an ice storm had knocked out both NDBs and that no Notam was ever issued.
