Roll or bank is the aircrafts movement about its longitudinal axis. Since theyre located on opposing sides of the longitudinal axis, both ailerons need to move in the opposite directions to complement each others motion. This movement turns the aircraft about the longitudinal axis, making it enter a bank.

The reaction in the form of increased thrust allows the aircraft to overcome drag and accelerate or climb. The complication with helicopters is that the main rotor is driven by an engine that applies a twisting force (torque) to spin it. Other Designs The tail rotor is not the only way to solve the torque reaction problem.
