Several of you asked me if I’d be designing another t-shirt for this year’s Cranky Dorkfest which comes to the park across from In-N-Out at LAX on September 14. One of you even found the link from last year’s and bought it, even though it’s no longer available. (Kudos to you for resourcesfulness, sir.) But now, I’m happy to report that I’ve put together a new design for this year’s event.

As an aviation geek, I love listening to air traffic control audio, and always enjoy the VASAviation YouTube channel, which does a great job covering noteworthy air traffic control interactions. I recently covered a heated exchange between an Aeromexico pilot and JFK ATC. I actually think the air traffic controller was reasonably professional, and more than anything, I felt bad for the stress he was under.

When you book an airline ticket, you’re typically on the hook for all kinds of taxes and fees. Some are government imposed fees, while others are carrier imposed. During this week’s Airlines Confidential podcast (which is always worth a listen), Scott McCartney made an interesting observation regarding how some airlines are using increasingly questionable tactics to avoid the federal excise tax on airfare.

Its typical flight covers just 720 nautical miles (1,333 km). In contrast, Delta Air Lines is 826 nautical miles (1,530 km), and United Airlines is 921 nautical miles (1,706 km).
