The FAA this month quietly published long-awaited guidance for the certification of powered-lift aircraft—the first new category of civil aircraft since helicopters were introduced in the 1940s. Previously, manufacturers worked toward eVTOL type certification under Part 23 regulations for light aircraft.

With lateral options dwindling, the Bell 47D went into a vertical lift. After one full revolution, the helicopter lifted rapidly from the ground and climbed immediately. In a cacophony of thrust reversers and maximum braking, the Falcon overran the end of the runway onto a gravel pad where the landing gear collapsed.
