Needing to fly two missed approaches at Sodus due to low weather. The first instance was due to low weather on the return home from Boston and the second was due to winds exceeding the control authority of the Warrior at Sodus when returning from SurnameFest (not blogged). For years, Rochester was my planned diversion airport.

Parking Availability & Challenges Parking is generally available; however, overnight and long-stay parking can be difficult to secure, particularly for ferry flights (no passengers on board) unless it is for crew rest. De-icing and hangar space are not available at this airport.

With its arrival back at its home airport, the ferry flight marked the end of a four-year-long saga that saw much of the carrier’s fleet mothballed. In all, 70 aircraft were sent by the carrier to be stored in the dry, arid conditions of the Australian desert. The plane had been in Alice Springs since September 2020.

David Legg Collection / Courtesy photo Once the decision to acquire C-FNJF was made, there followed a long period of work on the aircraft to make it ready not only for the long ferry flight to the UK but also for ongoing operations. The aircraft eventually sank (where it remains to this day).

The ferry flight to the museum , tentatively scheduled for August 10th this year, will likely mark the type’s final ever journey skyward under its own power. Transport Canada will do all of the approvals… And then, there might be a practice flight. I’m still waiting to hear about that.”

The weekend is action-packed with daily airshows, aircraft displays, military vehicles, WWII veterans, speakers, presentations, vendors, entertainers, Homefront education, mock battles, 20-plus acres of WWII encampments, nightly big-band hangar dances, and of course, the reenactors. WildKat returned to flight in the summer of 2018.

They battled German Messerschmitts and Focke-Wulfs, anti-aircraft artillery (flak), aircraft malfunctions, and frigid temperaturesflying in formations of hundreds while navigating through bad weather to their targets deep in enemy territory. Most of them sleep on WWII Army cots in a hangar. Army Air Corps uniforms.
