Preflight complete, hangar door closed, ready to go. Hello and Goodbye Final approach, runway 27L, Oakland County International ("Pontiac"). Because of low fog covering southern Michigan, Detroit Approach assigned me the RNAV-27L instrument approach procedure into Oakland County.

I had already fueled and readied the Warrior for departure, it was just a matter of pulling her out of the hangar. As we maneuvered for the approach, we passed through an invisible rain shower in the darkness of sufficient vigor that the sound of rain ticking on the windshield penetrated our headsets. Ground team!

At the airport, there was ice and snow to remove from in front of the hangar door, fuel to add to the Warrior now resting on three fully inflated tires (the left main had a new tube), and then there was the moment when I slipped on ice while pulling the airplane from the hangar and landed flat on my back. We had a deal.

The operator had a surveillance camera inside the hangar to capture the work and the preflight inspections. As a result, the checks were much more informal: usually the Director of Maintenance would check the work performed by the mechanics and he would ask the mechanics to check his work.

Since we lost our LPV approaches due to obstructions along the final approach course, the downgraded LNAV minimum descent altitude for the approach to runway 28 was 558 feet above the ground. We broke out right at the missed approach point which is much too high and close to the runway threshold to make a normal landing.

We taxied to the whole other end of the airport to the FBO Hangar Q60 which served avgas. After some vectoring by Green Bay approach, we were cleared for the RNP runway 30 approach at Appleton. After a while, and a lot to our surprise, human activity in the form of roads, towns and cars became apparent under our wings.

She had the students flying left handed patterns and directed me to enter on a right downwind where she expertly sequenced us into the conga line of piston aircraft queued up on final approach. It was busy, but Tower had it all well in hand. We have arrived!" We had arrived in the greater Boston metropolitan area!

Hangar space is sometimes available for under $50/night – a nice option if storms are expected. Phoenix Approach Control gave us a few delay vectors before turning us onto final approach. Some FBO’s provide a loaner car for pilots to drive to a nearby restaurant.

Owing to noise sensitive areas all around College Park Airport, the fact that my approach was almost lined-up with the wind-favored runway (runway 15) and given the lack of traffic in the pattern, I chose to go straight in and flew final approach over the University of Maryland, College Park campus. Some bucks spent on a hangar, updated paint and exterior, and a little TLC under the cowling, and your 30-year-old Cessna 172 will keep up with a brand-new one, for a lot less dollars. Maybe this is due to the slide rule and drafting table generation that designed them.

Rolling out on final approach, I was surprised to see another airplane stopped right at the runway threshold. Pilots approaching the runway for take off cannot see aircraft on final approach behind and above them. It was only half full of parked aircraft. Like our friend that morning.) Still.not cool.

Behind me, the other Cherokee (a Cherokee Six) landed and aggressively made for the main commercial hangar building. No wonder I got bounced around so much on final approach this morning , I thought. With one final look at Put-In-Bay's refuge harbor, my stomach rumbled and I left the observation deck in search of lunch.

I showed up early for the first afternoon launch, stopping by the hangar gedunk (pronounced gee-dunk, the sailor’s term for snack bar) to wolf down a cheese omelet chased with a chocolate shake. Because of its diminutive stance, naval aviators dubbed it the “teeny weenie.”

The aircraft was filled to full fuel and the pilot’s departure and flight to Murwillumbah was uneventful until the final approach to Murwillumbah. There was another person on the airfield, who was standing outside of a hangar at about halfway along the runway as the Cessna approached.
