Jet (and turboprop) turbine engines work more efficiently, and burn less fuel, at higher altitudes where the air is less dense. In gusty conditions, for example, crews tend to add a few knots to their touchdown speed, which allows for fluctuations in airspeed while on final approach.

The CRJ is interesting to fly with a lot of trimming required as it’s a long-bodied jet with a large swing either side of the CG. I mean, all jets I have flown are like that, but this is fairly sensitive to pitch, power, and flap configuration—all requiring lots of trimming. With a lighter corporate jet, that is powerful.

It was go-home day and launching with our back to the storm seemed appropriate as we headed to Detroit, where we were scheduled to step onto another jet and catch a ride home to finish our trip. We were tasked with ferrying an empty jet to LaGuardia Airport (KLGA), then we’d catch a ride home in the back of a different jet.

Imagine being on final approach right when a small-scale thermal breaks off the ground that can even send a 300 pound porta-potty flying high into the air. I configured the airplane the same way as noted on the Piper Climb chart: 105 mph (91 knots), flaps 10 ° , full throttle. Time To Fly Our aircraft can cruise for about 4 ½ hours plus an hour of reserve fuel at 130 knots. The approach and taxi are time compressed; the landing is normal speed. You miss a lot flying at 35,000 feet.
