With our diminished flight controllability and heavy ice load, we received vectors to swing out over Long Island Sound and turn carefully to approach straight in from the south on the north/south runway. They had moved to their strategic waiting position close to the landing runway threshold.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) differentiates an accident from an incident by imposing a threshold of aircraft damage set at $1 million. During the landing, following an excessive pitch-up movement by the aircraft, its aft fuselage contacted the runway approximately 326 meters (1,070ft) beyond the runway threshold.

The aircraft was flying with the help of the tail wind that's why the flight is shorter than the flight back to Taipei Songshan. Photo: EPS1) After 10 minutes of taxi, we were near the threshold of the runway. At the threshold, we were cleared to depart. The approach and landing in Taipei was a smooth affair.

The aircraft was powered by three General Electric CF6 turbofan engines, with one mounted under each wing and a third located above the rear fuselage in the base of the tail. On scanning the engine instruments, it quickly became apparent that the number two tail-mounted engine had failed.

Rolling out on final approach, I was surprised to see another airplane stopped right at the runway threshold. Usually, Alton Bay volunteers hold departure traffic significantly farther back from the threshold when other aircraft are about to land. Should that guy be so close to the threshold?" Joe asked.

When I got to the tail section, I reached for the elevator to inspect the trim tab actuators, but hesitated. What if the airplane pitched over on final approach? But just as I crossed the runway threshold at 50 feet, the genie leaped from its bottle and the nose once again pitched over violently.
