In 2014, the aircraft was removed from its perch, transported to a hangar at Salem Municipal Airport, and began its transformation from weathered display to airworthy warbird once again. The engine firewall will be installed at the bottom of the nacelle as shown, with the top section eventually reattached to the front wing spar.

The weather conditions at the time of the accident were conducive to the development of serious carburetor icing, which was consistent with the pilots announcement of a rough-running engine. Additionally, the rudder assembly was missing an attach link on the left rudder cable return spring between the spring and firewall.

For late November, the weather was goodno clouds, light winds, and a temperature of 44 degrees Fahrenheit. The fuselage from the firewall to the empennage was crushed. The 2017 Extra EA300 LC was purchased about a year ago, and, according to friends, the pilot limited himself to basic aerobatic maneuvers. The pilot died in the crash.

In 2008, the aircraft was purchased by Mike Schilling of Kenai, Alaska, and trucked to Geraldton, Ontario, where it was completely restored from the firewall back by Recon Air. I figured this was due to weather because it had been overcast most of the day. In 2001, the aircraft was purchased by Rustair Inc., I was right.

Probable cause(s): The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from trees after takeoff, during high density altitude weather conditions. The postaccident examination revealed a fuel leak in a fitting where the fuel line passes through the firewall to the engine.
