MOSAIC Progressing, 2025 Approval Likely

The biggest change being that an LSA is defined by its weight at 1320 pounds maximum gross weight. Under MOSAIC, we get rid of the weight requirement completely and it goes to a performance based standard. What has so far been agreed to by the FAA is 54 knots clean stall speed.

Published time to climb to 20,000 feet is 18 minutes, and cruise speeds are advertised to be 205 knots at 15,000 feet. Most A36 owners we talk with plan on 165 knots and 1,000 fpm climbs when lightly loaded. Pilot, Know Thyself: Discovering What It Means to Be Painfully Average

Flying Magazine

I took off from Runway 34L at 169,800 pounds gross weight, rotated at 1.8 minutes, covered 1,722 nm at an average ground speed of 511 knots, and burned 22,200 pounds of jet-A. Below 500 feet I got a bit slow, momentarily down to 147 knots, versus a reference speed of 144 and target of 152. I hand-flew the first 13.3

Game On!

The Texas winds were gusting anywhere from 15-25 knots, and like other aerobatic airplanes, the canopy can be easily blown off. As soon as the tail was up, I added full power and accelerated to 80 knots and rotated with the tiniest bit of back pressure. Before I knew it we had already hit 120 knots. Max Gross Weight: 2,200 lbs.

One major shift for MOSAIC LSA is higher gross weight, although no limit is specified. LSA are limited by regulation to 1,320 pounds (110 pounds more for seaplanes) and clean stall at 45 knots. Panelists agreed that higher aircraft weights allow more robust airframes, greater fuel loads, and more seating capacity.
