Although I havent spent much time around GB1s (except for drooling over them while they are on display and flying at airshows) I am always taken aback by how much larger the airplane appears to be in personparticularly, the tall, sweeping rudder that curves down to a sharp point with just enough ground clearance. Max Gross Weight: 2,200 lbs.

We Fly: Epic E1000 AX

Epic has just released the most recent iteration of the airplane, the E1000 AX, with a major avionics upgrade including Garmin’s G1000 NXi suite and upped the useful load to an advertised (on its website) 2,860 pounds—gross weight 8,000, max ramp weight 8,035. The solution is to put something in the baggage compartment.

In order to be flown by a sport pilot, the resulting airplane must still meet the current regulations—1,320 pounds maximum gross weight, 120 knots max cruise speed, for example—but how it gets there is up to the builder. Before anything else, these are single-engine, unpressurized two-seat lightweights with a max gross weight of 1320 pounds. Check that against the max gross of a Piper Malibu at roughly 4300 pounds, or a Beech A36 Bonanza at around 3650 pounds or a Cessna 150 at 1600 pounds gross. GPH on 92 knots. Same for gliders.
