Although I havent spent much time around GB1s (except for drooling over them while they are on display and flying at airshows) I am always taken aback by how much larger the airplane appears to be in personparticularly, the tall, sweeping rudder that curves down to a sharp point with just enough ground clearance. Max Gross Weight: 2,200 lbs.

To some extent this was carried out with the Cherokee, though the key design elementuse of a stabilator in place of a conventional elevator and fixed horizontal stabilizeris likely the influence of John Thorp. Thorp joined the Piper design team during the Cherokees development; his own Sky Scooter used a stabilator.

In order to be flown by a sport pilot, the resulting airplane must still meet the current regulations—1,320 pounds maximum gross weight, 120 knots max cruise speed, for example—but how it gets there is up to the builder. The rudder hardly calls attention to itself outside of having plenty of authority. A nuance, perhaps.

Noting that the application of fertilizer and other chemicals often corroded a conventional tail, Pellarini simply attached two tail booms that each carried its own horizontal stabilizer and elevator. The fuselage is 9 feet tall, just about even with the top of the twin rudders.

Before anything else, these are single-engine, unpressurized two-seat lightweights with a max gross weight of 1320 pounds. Check that against the max gross of a Piper Malibu at roughly 4300 pounds, or a Beech A36 Bonanza at around 3650 pounds or a Cessna 150 at 1600 pounds gross. Same for gliders.

Given that gross weight for the NX is 2,300 pounds and the standard empty weight in base configuration is 1,216 pounds, CubCrafters achieved its goal. While the NXCub can carry a big load, it can only do so if loaded carefully because the weight and balance envelope has an unusual shape. That got our attention.
