A witness reported that they saw the airplane lift off from the runway and remain in ground effect until it crossed the departure end of the runway. As it crossed the departure end of the runway, it was in a left bank and then struck a tree, then came down in shallow water off a public beach.

This allows the airspeed to slowly dissipate while the airplane is flown just above the surface in ground effect. When the wheels first touch the ground, the proper technique allows the wings to continue supporting much of the weight of the airplane.

Those familiar phrases more right rudder, watch your airspeed, flare, flare, flare! Time seemed to freeze as I floated in ground effect. The main gear struck the runway with surprising force, causing me to balloon far above the runway. Arriving at the runway with too much energy will lead to a long flare.

An incomplete summary description of FASF is whether the airplane made it out of ground effect. On downwind, ATC had me at 3,000 feet going over the departure end of the crossing runway. I could see that the spot on the ground in the windshield that was not moving was short of the runway.

I was listening intently to the ASOS for wind or gusts, letting it repeat 5 or 6 times with the exact same report: 9 kts straight down the runway; no gusts. That was the runway we would use to land. It’s worth noting that Shmulik had a close call in the past: a jet pulled onto the runway in front of him with no radio call.

Naming it Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome (ORA), Palen built a turf runway and got those old airplanes flying again. Unfortunately, that airshow was cut short by a landing accident ending with a bruised pilot and a Fleet Model 1 biplane on its back in the middle of ORA's turf runway. Over time, he built an extensive flying menagerie.
