The familiar yellow Taylorcraft is parked by a galvanized corrugated steel roof shed-style hangar. With the airplane up on blocks and tied down in the hangar, I sent Andrew a photo. The ramp is empty, so I ask if hed like to taxi us to the departure end of the runway. The main road between the houses is the old runway.

Sometime between 1952 and 1956, the 12/30 runway was extended to accommodate early jet aircraft such as the T-33 Shooting Star. Credit: Richard Vandervord) The facilities were sparse—just two main hangars and a cluster of general aviation buildings—but the expansive tarmac made it ideal for storing aircraft awaiting conversion or maintenance.

How fueling is handled, the amount of space on the ramp, and the ability to get the aircraft in a hangar are important factors. Anyone who has ever stepped on a military tarmac can’t help but smile when seeing the Base Operations sign. The FBO boasts 20,000 sq ft of hangar and office space and enough ramp to support a Boeing 767.

The present condition of the tarmac, taxiways and runways is good, and there’s no airport construction currently underway. While hangars are available for transient business aircraft, space is limited, with availability on a first-come basis. Airport Options Shannon is the primary business aviation airport for Western Ireland.
