Location of the Honeywell SI-800 airspeed indicator on a 757/767 panel Inputs All airspeed indicators need two air inputs. Ram air from a pitot tube and static (undisturbed) outside air from a static port, usually a hole on the side of the fuselage. Pilots set the bugs before takeoff and prior to landing.

This particular 172 normally cruised at 120 mph indicated airspeed, but with the ice it would barely do 90 mph and that required full throttle! A few minutes later, we heard the center controller clear a Trans Missouri Airlines commuter plane for the VOR Runway 30 approach to Jefferson City. What had happened?

The base had switched runways from Runway 35 to Runway 17, so that when I came back into the base I was approaching the traffic pattern from the north. But I somehow had it fixed in my mind that I was approaching from the south, to Runway 35. Never mind the instruments that showed me flying south. All I saw was blackness.
