Flying in the clouds in a single engine airplane when the OAT is below freezing is not a good idea! The general prognosis indicated no icing in the clouds, no turbulence and a quartering headwind from the west resulting in a mere five knots of headwind component. It was also destroying the propellers air foils causing a loss of thrust.

More air molecules in engine cylinders allow the engine to produce more power; more air molecules moving across the propellor blades and wings means more efficient thrust and lift. Bad data caused by turbulence, turns, and other anomalies was discarded. When we reached the OATES intersection, I pointed the Six toward Winslow.
