The final accident report talked about failure of the pitot tube, crew coordination and communication issues, misunderstanding of the Airbus flight control priority system, and the impact of automation surprise and startle factor upon the crew.

I have a Kollsman Type D-2 pitot tube, off of an Australian CAC Mustang. I also used an old VOR in the upper left quadrant, which will be replaced when the time comes. So far, I have collected an interesting range of P-51 parts. Lastly, but certainly not least, I have the beginnings of a complete instrument panel.

The Heading Indicator should not be confused with the Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI), which is an evolution of the Heading Indicator that includes VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) and Instrument Landing System (ILS) indications. The pitot-static system consists of one or more pitot tubes and static ports.

Just north of Jefferson City, the Kansas City Center controller cleared us to the Jeff City VOR, which was on the airport, to hold at 4,000 feet. I got out my instrument approach chart and studied the holding pattern and the VOR approach procedure. Then my worst fears became reality.
