The Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) defines the touchdown zone as the first 3,000 feet of the runway beginning at the threshold, and the touchdown zone markers are spaced 500 ft apart. It’s positioned for easy access by aircraft but won’t obstruct other airport traffic too much.
