Even if you have a datalink weather capability in the cockpit, dont give up on your air traffic controllers. Even though the controller cant see your view outside of the cockpit, they can offer near real-time guidance around the most significant cells. And thats good news because its the wind that we really want to track.

My eyes were busy: inside the cockpit, watching, monitoring, and checking that chart; and outside the cockpit, searching for a first glimpse of our new destination. Then, descending through just a few hundred feet AGL, and a few hundred yards from the end of the runway, the turbulence diminished. There wasn’t much talk.

Moderate wind shear in some areas could make some thermals somewhat difficult to work but that, too, is typical. He only needed a glide ratio of 14:1 to reach the airfield to arrive at a typical pattern altitude of 1,000 ft AGL. At this point he still had an altitude of 8,275 ft MSL, i.e. 2,739 ft AGL.
