Examining over 100 years of flight automation and the history of the autopilot

Aerotime

His system would provide an aircraft with automatic stability and control mechanism, through the control of the ailerons, stabilizer, and tail rudder through the use of a set of simple gyroscopes. Sperrys innovation was presented at the competition installed in a Curtiss C-2 single-engine airplane with a hull-shaped lower fuselage.

Mach Number Explained: What It Is and Why Pilots Use It

That’s the speed your airspeed indicator shows based on ram air pressure in the pitot tube. Ailerons can suffer from a phenomenon called “aileron buzz” or control reversal at high Mach. Indicated airspeed works reasonably well to estimate how the aircraft “feels” the air.

In fact, the unusual pitot-tube location—it peeks out from the center of the prop spinner—was chosen to reduce fuselage-to-wing connections. On the walkaround, you doubtlessly noted the full-span flaperons (flaps plus ailerons as one unit). It’s also why the 20 gallons of fuel is carried in a robust tank behind the two seats.

Panic, And How Not To

Now the T-38 would roll twice per second, a 720-degree-per-second roll rate, and I aileron-rolled it five or six times right over the cloud deck, the coolest visual ever, and then rolled out. I deserved the taunting; doing aileron rolls like that and getting discombobulated was my own fault. No one did that, by the way. What About You?

Windows and doors should be firmly latched and engine inlets, pitot tubes, and static ports covered. A lap belt secured to the control wheel can serve as a substitute for external aileron and elevator locks. Then, chock the wheels as well as tying down the airframe. Gust locks are also recommended.

If ailerons affect the longitudinal axis of the plane, then how do they turn the plane? Ailerons control the roll of the plane by turning around its longitudinal axis. Ailerons (“little wings” in French) are like smaller wings attached to the trailing edges of the main wings. You are at 8,000’ MSL and climbing at 85kt.

Getting Back in the Air

Out in the practice area, I did some of my favorite beyond-ACS but still normal category exercises—alternating steep turns with full aileron deflection, extended low speed flight, and Dutch rolls to 45-degree bank each way, again with full aileron deflection. Then the CFI gave me a few unusual attitudes, and all was well.
