That’s the speed your airspeed indicator shows based on ram air pressure in the pitot tube. For example, an airliner might indicate only 250 knots at 35,000 feet, but its true airspeed could be over 430 knots. The result is a region of separated, turbulent flow behind the shock. Safety is also a factor.

The general prognosis indicated no icing in the clouds, no turbulence and a quartering headwind from the west resulting in a mere five knots of headwind component. A few minutes later, we heard the center controller clear a Trans Missouri Airlines commuter plane for the VOR Runway 30 approach to Jefferson City.

On the 3rd of March 2023, a passenger in a private jet died after severe injuries in the cabin, which were originally reported as caused by severe turbulence. Incidents of severe turbulence are becoming more common, often leading to injury. There was no turbulence. This accident stood out as fatalities are very rare.

Moving air from outside feeds into the pitot tubes and fills a pressure diaphragm. The sensor detects the amount of force from the pitot impact pressure and gives it airspeed indications by converting those values into speed. Airline pilots also need to know airspeed so they can know when to engage the landing gear.
