Fear of Landing

On the 29th of December 2024, a Boeing 737-800 operated by a low-cost South Korean airline crashed after an emergency landing and overshooting the runway at Muan International Airport in South Korea. They turned and attempted to land in the opposite direction of the runways operation that day, going north to south.

The touchdown speed will have already been calculated using a combination of aircraft weight, length of runway in use, and prevailing conditions. If you are traveling towards the front of the cabin on an Airbus aircraft, you may also hear three ‘bleeps’ emanating from behind the flight deck door as the plane approaches the runway.

We both had a good chuckle, then we lurched out of the parking spot as I tested the toe brakes for the first time and began to waddle our way to the runway in the mighty Cessna 150. How they came to a stop holding short of the runway generally gave a preview as to how they would handle a plane for the rest of the flight.

But landing it safely on the runway is a skill. Brief that you will use the right rudder to align the aircraft straight with the runway and the left aileron to counteract drift. If you aren’t in alignment with the runway at 500 ft or are off speed or profile, go around. Brief the runway conditions.

A pilot loads the data into the FMC and submits an ACARS takeoff performance data request for the expected runway (in the old days, we used thick binders of airport specific charts). AeroData provides the crew with runway-specific takeoff thrust setting, speeds, flap setting, and critical engine out performance data.

The Classic Boeing Airspeed Indicator

The ADC processes the data and sends it to various aircraft systems including airspeed/Mach indicators (like the SI-800), altimeters, Flight Management Systems (FMS), Autopilot Flight Director System (AFDS), elevator feel computers, and more. The speeds are based on aircraft weight and performance (affected by runway and weather).
