Because of this situation, I had to learn how to flight plan a flight of 1,120 nm up in the flight levels from Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania (KMPO), where the airplane is hangared, to Key West. We filed IFR and got our clearance in the usual way from ground control at Punta Gorda, then flew eastward to the uncontrolled Sebring, Florida airport.

It’s happened to us that we get a clearance, load the passengers, and start up. We finally get to the runway, but have to wait another 30 to 40 minutes with the engines burning 400 lb of fuel an hour. Since July 2021, a new Business Aviation Gate has opened with its own customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) clearance channel. A general aviation channel within the common terminal with CIQ clearance channel is available.

We made an IFR departure that morning on runway 16 and climbed above the ceiling in short order. But I accepted the clearance knowing that I could change it with a local Approach control like Syracuse. We broke out right at the missed approach point which is much too high and close to the runway threshold to make a normal landing.

We took off from runway 25 (via backtrack) southbound IFR to Shefferville via DIRECT. At Shefferville , the weather was really bad in rain and landed via the RNP runway 17… the airport was completely empty ! ATC assigned runway 18 and landed. Climb 16’000ft on runway heading 36, squawk 6230 USA here we come !

I had already fueled and readied the Warrior for departure, it was just a matter of pulling her out of the hangar. We departed Sodus VFR and contacted Rochester Approach for our instrument clearance. After leaving the theater, we stopped for a quick dinner and continued on to the Williamson Sodus Airport. All went according to plan.

In February, we went to Washington and spent two days there obtaining the necessary clearances from the Department of State, the Air Force, and the National Aeronautic Association. Last year there were 145 inches, and they say when a ship lands on the plowed runways it looks as though it were disappearing down a long tunnel.

After warming the oil I taxied for runway two and picked up my super secret squawk code to get out with the TFR in place. I contacted Asheville ground to pick up my clearance but it was not on file. That’s odd.
