During the fall of 2024, I planned a flight to Massey Aerodrome (MD1) in Maryland that I cancelled due to weather. I departed the Williamson-Sodus Airport solo at 8:00 am and picked up my instrument clearance in the air from a Rochester Approach controller with a familiar voice. Within those hangars, I found a number of treasures.

Weather-wise, you never know what you're going to get on each third Sunday of May along the south shore of Lake Ontario. It seemed that he thought I was dispensing take-off clearances. As the weather dropped, the only other non-WFC fly-in launched in his Husky. Even when the weather is not as desired, it's still a good time.

This process became protracted, as various modifications made to the airframe required clearance by the Canadian regulator Transport Canada. The crew stayed in the lifeboats overnight, as a further rescue attempt was once again hampered by nightfall and poor weather. The aircraft eventually sank (where it remains to this day).

A private VIP aircraft can only stay overnight if hangar space is available. After 40 minutes, it must be moved from the operation platform to the hangars. Handlers can assist during this process.

However, a forecast for low IFR weather in that part of Maine led us to cancel it. I had no interest in flying one hour north only to be shut out of our destination by weather below minimums for the available instrument approach procedure. Still the better part of an hour away from home, weather conditions were concerning.

Facilities include a lounge, crew lounge, and heated 3,000 sqm hangar that can accommodate aircraft up to BBJ size. No hangar space or maintenance options are available for GA at LFPG or LFPO. I had already fueled and readied the Warrior for departure, it was just a matter of pulling her out of the hangar. We departed Sodus VFR and contacted Rochester Approach for our instrument clearance. We learned the next day that a circuit breaker for the weather sensing instrumentation tripped, but the transmitter still worked.

Beating the Odds I called for and received taxi clearance to the museum and started rolling. Dan received the same clearance. Dan received his taxi clearance, then offered that the whole process works better when the chocks are removed before engine start. Mere recollection of the incident was enough to make me blush.

The first flight got weathered out, with broken clouds at 1,500 feet. It had undergone some repair work done after experiencing soot and smoke damage from a fire in a nearby hangar. This 172 had a flap extension speed of 85 knots, and my old Cessna 172’s limit was 100 mph, or 87 knots.

Weather was good along the way but the closer we got to our destination, the worse the weather below. At Shefferville , the weather was really bad in rain and landed via the RNP runway 17… the airport was completely empty ! We taxied to the whole other end of the airport to the FBO Hangar Q60 which served avgas.

This was another satisfying trip, full of ADM, IMSAFE, and trade-offs—and weather. The weather was… interesting. Fussing with the avionics to keep tabs on the weather gave many more knob touches than the airplane itself. The FAA weather said a thunderstorm was forecast, gusts to 6 knots. Lesson learned. What else?

So far, everything had gone smoothly for us and, before long, I had my instrument clearance to Beverly, an assigned departure runway (02 with an intersection departure at taxiway Alpha), and a taxi route. There are options for hangar spaces at MRPV (Pavas) but aircraft reposition will be required Late November to early April is the high season and when overnight parking often becomes unavailable. MROC has only eight GA parking spots.

It was not an inspiring morning to fly out of Sodus, but I knew that the poor weather was localized to the Lake Ontario shore and that Washington DC was forecast to be sunny and significantly warmer. When I contacted Rochester Approach, the controller came back with, "Are you looking for your clearance to College Park?"
