Going Below Minimums

AV Web

The FAA doesnt guarantee terrain clearance at minimums all the way to the next state. However the indicated airspeed at which you circle is not the same as the true airspeed , and of course the difference increases with altitude. In fact, the area that is clear of obstacles at minimums is very small.

Air pressure and density

Professional Pilot

However, with no room to navigate up the steep glacial valley, the pilots finessed the airplane over the hurdle with no more than 200 ft of clearance. In addition, decreased air density also decreases ram air pressure, meaning a indicated airspeed from a pressure-based airspeed indicator will read lower than the true airspeed.

We Fly: CubCrafters NXCub

Flying Magazine

In general, tailwheel airplanes do well on unimproved airstrips because of prop clearance and, with larger main gear tires, the ability to handle ruts and uneven ground. The POH gives obstacle clearance takeoff information only for the tailwheel X Cub and shows it as 974 feet to clear a 50-foot obstacle. However, they are not magic.

Danger lurks in circling approaches

Air Facts

Particular attention to true airspeed vs. turn radius. If you depart MDA on the downwind or base leg, you’re on your own as far as obstacle clearance. What specific indicated airspeed will be flown/adhered to during the circling maneuver? Be fully configured and on speed prior to receiving landing clearance.

What Is Air Density? A Simple Guide for Pilots

Pilot Institute

For example, if we were to takeoff on an airfield at sea level at 0C (32F), it would take 1520ft to reach our obstacle clearance height of 50ft. Whereas for the same airfield on a different day, if it were 30C (86F), that same obstacle clearance height would take 1880ft. That’s an extra 360ft!
