Our old and slow Stearman PT-17 biplanes were racing along at 65 mph as we were fighting a 20-knot headwind, so we were still almost 15 minutes from touchdown! We made a nice two ship formation landing on runway 8L and were directed to taxi to Deltas (TOC) ramp which is located mid-field.

As the aircraft approached Nome, air traffic controllers informed the pilot of flight 445 that Nomes runway was being de-iced and was temporarily closed, and that flight 445 could expect a 10 to 15 minute delay in landing clearance to be given. Indications show that its speed dropped from around 160 knots to 110 knots.

This 172 had a flap extension speed of 85 knots, and my old Cessna 172’s limit was 100 mph, or 87 knots. There was a nice crosswind, and I demonstrated landing on a concrete expansion joint, offset from the runway centerline. Then off to the other runway for a full stop. Hmm, OK, how about the LPV approach?

This was indeed the case as I observed my GPS indicated ground speed to be 165 Knots. I encountered unexpected headwinds to start, slowing my groundspeed down to 75 knots at times. Landing in Moriarty was somewhat odd and memorable, as I was expecting a busy airport with its long runways and did not encounter a single soul.
