The flight crew initially received a cockpit indication that the first officer’s anti-ice system had failed, along with a ‘Pitot Standby’ message. Aircraft are fitted with pitot tubes to assist in providing air speed data to the pilots. They received a block clearance between 30,000ft and 35,000ft.

I filed my IFR flight plan, received a clearance and took off into the gray winter sky. We entered the holding pattern over Jeff City, flew two circuits and finally received our approach clearance. He had been a sniper and a LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) team member while serving with the army in Vietnam.

Under VFR, the MEF guarantees 100’ obstacle/terrain clearance within that quadrant. You encounter icing, and your pitot tube completely ices over, but your static port remains open. Do you need a taxi clearance from ground control in this area? You are at 8,000’ MSL and climbing at 85kt.

Repairs included replacing the pitot tube/angle-of-attack sensor and the outside air temperature probe. The plan was to shoot an instrument landing system (ILS) at the military airport next door, but clearance delivery told us they were landing the other direction.
