Going Below Minimums

AV Web

The FAA doesnt guarantee terrain clearance at minimums all the way to the next state. However the indicated airspeed at which you circle is not the same as the true airspeed , and of course the difference increases with altitude. In fact, the area that is clear of obstacles at minimums is very small.

Particular attention to true airspeed vs. turn radius. If you depart MDA on the downwind or base leg, you’re on your own as far as obstacle clearance. Be fully configured and on speed prior to receiving landing clearance. Specific discussion to neighboring terrain features such as buildings, towers, hills, trees.

What Is Air Density? A Simple Guide for Pilots

Pilot Institute

For example, if we were to takeoff on an airfield at sea level at 0C (32F), it would take 1520ft to reach our obstacle clearance height of 50ft. Whereas for the same airfield on a different day, if it were 30C (86F), that same obstacle clearance height would take 1880ft. That’s an extra 360ft!

With jet cruise true airspeeds between 400 and 500 kts, this has a big effect on ground speed, and therefore on cruise performance and efficiency. The TMI number is important as sometimes you need to read it back after receiving your clearance via voice. NAT clearance is normally requested, received, and confirmed via CPDLC.
