The flight crew initially received a cockpit indication that the first officer’s anti-ice system had failed, along with a ‘Pitot Standby’ message. Aircraft are fitted with pitot tubes to assist in providing air speed data to the pilots.

Even the most automated aircraft, such as the Airbus A350, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and the F-35 military jet, come with such instruments fitted as standard should an electrical failure affect the more modern cockpit display screens. Suddenly, one of the Airbus three redundant pitot tubes clogged with ice crystals. While some wreckage was recovered within days, it took nearly two years to retrieve the flight and cockpit voice recorders from the ocean floor. As the late baseball manager/philosopher Yogi Berra famously said, It aint over until its over.

The captain slowed the aircraft from 104 knots and exited the runway onto a taxiway. First officer : Fff– They exited the runway to the taxiway and the captain shut down the left engine. Sure enough, as he crossed to the right side of the aircraft, he saw that the red cover was still on the pitot probe. Captain : Yeah.

Knowing what to do ahead of time helps prevent the kind of in-cockpit panic that can lead to paralysis by analysis and other undesirable human factors. The base had switched runways from Runway 35 to Runway 17, so that when I came back into the base I was approaching the traffic pattern from the north. Impossible.

Zooming onto the aluminum skin of the DC-6 reveals that no pitot tube, landing gear strut, or antenna detail was ignored in its construction. I checked the manifold pressure and oil pressure gauges one final time, and with everything looking good, the DC-6 and I thundered down the runway.

New rear cockpit low fuel light is installed, and only finish wiring is needed, plugs were pulled, and engine has been cranked over to pre-oil, and we have 15 to 20 PSI in the system. We also got the correct pitot tube, and itʼll get painted and installed so a static check can get done…thanks Kurt Grasso for the part!
