There are runways 7L and 7R (which are parallel, at a heading of 70 degrees), and then theres runway 8 (which is nearly parallel, as its at a heading of 80 degrees). The runway layout at Phoenix Airport The United 737 was coming straight in to land on runway 7R. Meanwhile the Delta A330 was on a base leg for runway 8.

Turning left would have opened up more space between the helicopter and Flight 5342, which was heading for Runway 33 at an altitude of roughly 300 feet. She did not turn left.
