It works by reading the difference between static pressure and total pressure from air flowing into a pitot tube. In high-speed and high-altitude scenarios, like for military and commercial jets, compressibility affects the accuracy of your IAS. In lower-speed, low-altitude flights, IAS and EAS are almost the same.
