A few minutes later, we heard the center controller clear a Trans Missouri Airlines commuter plane for the VOR Runway 30 approach to Jefferson City. What had happened?

A lighting the runway with under 1000 ft to go, the pilots breathed a sigh of relief. Every pilot knows that aircraft fly because the forces of lift and thrust balance or exceed the weight and drag countering them. The mountain airstrip was notoriously short, and on this hot, summer afternoon, they needed an even longer takeoff roll.

ATC asked if the aircraft required the full length of the runway and the crew confirmed that they did. The aircraft accelerated along the runway and reached V1, the take-off decision speed, of 155 knots normally. The #2 engine restarted but was not able to spool up and recover thrust. The aircraft lifted off at 08:08:39 UTC.

Around 13 seconds before touchdown as the aircraft was descending through 153 feet above ground level (AGL) the TSB said the CRJ900s indicated airspeed increased to 154 knots whereas the ground speed did not change appreciably, consistent with a performance-increasing wind gust. The bank angle increased to a 4.7right bank.
