He headed for Perry Park but the aircraft was in a descent and he determined it wouldn’t make the field. Perry Park’s elevation is 6700 feet so the density altitude was well north of the little twin’s published single-engine ceiling of 7500 feet. He told the student he wasn’t sure it fully feathered.

This one is for an unstable approach due to an excessive descent rate (1,232 ft/min). degree glideslope, high density altitude, and an approach speed of 150 knots, all of which put our nominal descent rate very close to the book maximum of 1,000 ft/min. Before FlightPulse, I probably wouldn’t have remembered it.

After a shallow turn from downwind, the Bonanza was positioned on base at a proper altitude and airspeed and with a constant descent rate. While it wasn’t a particularly hot day, Big Bear’s density altitude was reported as 8,200 feet, resulting in a higher true airspeed compared to indicated airspeed.

The calculated density altitude was 4,790 feet. Probable cause(s): The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from trees after takeoff, during high density altitude weather conditions. The airplane made a slow descent toward the east for about nine minutes, away from the destination airport.

So the density altitude was almost 9,000 feet. The bank meant level flight became a descent. Also working against the pilot is the fact that Santa Fe sits at 6,200 feet, and while it was only 9 o’clock in the morning, the temperature was already 79 degrees Fahrenheit. This hurts many aspects of airplane performance.

At approximately 30-40 feet agl, the spinning stopped and the helicopter appeared to stabilize for a brief moment before continuing a nose-low, forward descent into the grass north of Runway 28. Feather the blades to generate lift from the upward flow of air during the descent (instead of pushing the air downwards in powered flight).
